It's been said that "The first intervention in natural childbirth is the one that a healthy woman does herself when she walks out the front door of her own home in labor. It is from that first intervention that all others follow." - Michael Rosenthal, OB/GYN
Staying in the farmiliar comforts of home during labor and birth facilitates the physiological process of childbirth. This reduces the need for medical intervention to produce the birth of baby. Which in turn, reduces the risks to mother and baby that accompany many medical interventions.
In 2005 the British Medical Journal published a study that concluded "Planned home birth for low risk women in North America using certified professional midwives was associated with lower rates of medical intervention but similar intrapartum and neonatal mortality to that of low risk hospital births in the United States." "Excellent outcomes with much lower intervention rates are achieved at home births. This may be because the overuse of interventions in hospital births introduces risks or the home environment promotes problem-free labors.” ~ Henci Goer
We are thrilled to work with women who desire a homebirth and who acknowledge responsibility for their own bodies and babies and who do so through maintaining a healthy lifestyle, choosing knowledgable health care providers, and staying up to date on current pregnancy & chilbirth issues.
Midwife means "with woman". In countries where midwives are the primary birth attendants, the rate of natural birth rises significantly. The use of medical technology and cesarean section is dramatically reduced. Throughout the world the midwife is recognized as the " guardian of normal childbirth".
